ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effects of body mass index (BMI) on 24-hour intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuations in adolescences. Methods Totally 90 healthy adolescences were included in the study.Measurements of 24-hour IOP were obtained by Goldmann applanation tonometer on 5:00 am,7:00 am,10 ∶ 00 am,2:00 pm,6:00 pm and 10:00 pm.BMI was calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters (kg · m-2).The patients were divided into three groups according to BMI,and they were Group 1 (BMI < 25 kg · m-2),Group 2 (25 ≤ BMI < 30kg · m-2),Group 3 (BMI ≥ 30 kg · m-2).Data were analyzed by statistic software SPSS 22.0.Results The mean of IOP,peak IOP,valley IOP and fluctuation value of IOP were (16.72 ±3.30)mmHg (1 kPa =7.5 mmHg),(19.26 ±3.68)mmHg,(14.29 ±3.26)mmHg and (4.98 ± 1.91)mmHg,respectively.And there was no significant differences in the fluctuation value of IOP among the three groups (all P > 0.05);the differences in mean IOP,peak IOP,valley IOP between group 1 and group 3 were significant (all P <0.05).However,the differences between group 1 and group 2,group 2 and group 3 showed no significant differences (all P > 0.05).Pearson correlation analysis showed that BMI was positively correlated with mean IOP and peak IOP (both P < 0.05).Conclusion In the adolescent population, individuals with higher BMI tend to have higher mean IOP and peak IOP.

ABSTRACT

AlM: To examine the retinal nerve fiber layer ( RNFL ) changes in early primary open angle glaucoma ( POAG ) by comparing the superior half of the optic disc with the inferior disc half.METHODS: lt was a clinical observational study. The study included 30 patients ( 39 eyes ) with POAG and 20 normal subjects ( 40 eyes ) . Visual field was tested by Zeiss Humphrey750 and the optic disc topographic parameters and RNFL thickness were measured by Zeiss Cirru HD-OCT. Collecting information included visual field mean defect ( MD ) , glaucoma hemifield test ( GHT ) , intraocular pressure ( lOP ) , C/D ratio and RNFL thickness. Data were analyzed by statistic software SPSS18. 0. The differences between two groups were assessed using t test.RESULTS: The differences of superior RNFL minus inferior RNFL thichness on the corresponding clock-hour locations were caculated in two groups. There was a significant difference in superonasal- inferonasal RNFL thickness between two groups (t=2. 526, P=0. 014), and there were no significant differences in the others ( all P>0. 05).CONCLUSlON: The asymmetry of optic disc hemifield RNFL is found in early primary open angle glaucoma patients. The superonasal RNFL ( 1 o’clock for right eye, and 11 o’clock for left eye ) is more fragile to loss than inferonasal RNFL (5 o’clock for right eye, and 7 o’clock for left eye) .

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the ocular complication after radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC).METHODS: The authors performed a previous study on keratopathy in 213 NPC patients who received first stage radiation and had at least 10 months of follow-up. These patients were categorized into three groups depending on NPC clinic stages. Rates and proportions of keratopathy occurring in these groups were compared and analyzed with Chi-square Test and Spearman rank correlation coefficient.RESULTS: Radiation keratopathy developed in 19 patients, about 8.9% (19/213). The latency value was 3 to 30days. The effect of NPC clinic stages and radiation did on the development of keratopathy was not statistically significant (P>0.05).CONCLUSION: The NPC clinic stages and radiation doses plays few effects on the development of keratopathy. It may play a key role that corneal nerves damage induced ocular surface diseases. It can not be excluded that individuals have different sensitivities to radiation.
